The Nikos Kazantzakis airport in Heraklion and Daskalogiannis airport in Chania cater to international travelers. Crete significantly contributes to Greece’s economy and cultural heritage, while maintaining its distinct local cultural traits. In 1898, Crete, longing to join the Greek state, gained autonomy under the Ottomans, becoming the Cretan State. For us, Heraklion is also the culinary heart of Crete. It’s equally impressive (less crowded), and offers excellent guided tours in German. Located 7 km south of Heraklion, easily accessible by bus , Line 2, or rental car, we had a German-speaking private guide, but only one of us could listen at a time. In the 2nd century AD, at least three Cretan cities (Lyttos, Gortyn, Hierapytna) joined the Panhellenion, a league of Greek cities founded by Emperor Hadrian. Gortyn became the island’s capital (and Crete was made a Roman province), along with Cyrenaica, known as Creta et Cyrenaica. In 220 BC, the island was ravaged by a war between two opposing city alliances. While cities continued to feud among themselves, they involved mainland powers like Macedon, Rhodes, and Ptolemaic Egypt in their disputes.
